Overview of iconik Premiere Pro Proxy workflow

The proxy workflow with iconik and Adobe Premiere Pro allows you to import proxies of assets managed by iconik and later reconnect the High Resolution Original. It will also allow import of the original high resolution file and then connect the proxy for that file in case you need to share the project file with someone that doesn't have access to the originals.

It is important to note that due to limitations with the Adobe Premiere Pro API if you have a Project Ingest setting that automatically creates proxies then when you import a proxy from iconik Premiere Pro will automatically create a proxy of the proxy. Please turn of the ingest setting before you start importing from iconik.

Turning on Proxy workflow.

To turn on the proxy workflow:

  1. Open the iconik panel and login
  2. Click on your user icon on the top right
  3. Choose "Preferences"
  4. Toggle on "Use Proxy Workflow"

Importing a proxy

This can be done via search and collections by right clicking on the search item and choosing “Open Asset Proxy”.

In the asset page for the asset, you can click on the gearbox menu and choose “Open Asset Proxy“

You can also right click on a collection and import all Proxies for the collection.

If the asset is locally available it will open the asset, if it is only available from the Cloud the panel will download the file and then it will be opened.

Importing the original

This can be done via search and collections by right clicking on the search item and choosing “Open Asset”.

In the asset page for the asset, you can click on the gearbox menu and choose “Open Asset“

If the asset is locally available it will open the asset, if it is only available from the Cloud the panel will download the file and then it will be opened.

When the asset is locally available and opened we automatically check for the existance of a PPRO_PROXY format on local storage. If there is a PPRO_PROXY, this will automatically be attached to the original asset.

Synchronizing the project with the iconik Panel

For the panel to understand what is in the project we synchronise information about the project to the panel. Then we know what media is in the project, what media came from iconik and what bins and sequences are being used.

These actions cause the panel to parse and understand the current project:

  • When you drag and drop or open new media into the project.
  • When you create new sequences, or bin items in the project.
  • When you import from iconik into the project.
  • When the panel is first opened.
  • When a sequence is uploaded from the panel
  • When media is reconnected.

Currently we don't get notifications from the following:

  • If media disappears or becomes unavailable
  • When you remove a Project Item from a project.

Manual Synchronization

If you have done the those operations and the menus are not up to date:

  1. Open the panel
  2. Go to the Projects overview
  3. Select the Gearbox to the right of the project
  4. Choose Synchronize Project

Reconnecting Original

If you are in the search or collection page right click on the asset and choose “Reconnect Asset Hi-Res”. If you navigate to the asset page for that asset, click on the gearbox and choose “Reconnect Asset Hi-Res”.

For a file that is available locally or that is managed by an ISG it will reconnect the Original to the proxy, if its not available it will download the Original and reconnect it.

It should be noted that for this to work the original should have the same number of audio channels as the proxy used, otherwise Premiere will not be able to reconnect

The steps that this will take are:

  1. Download or find the original file
  2. Rewrite the mediapath to the original file's media path, replacing the path of the proxy.
  3. Attach the proxy that was used as a proxy to the original file.

Bulk reconnect

  1. Open the panel
  2. Go to the Project overview
  3. To the right of Project Items click on the gearbox
  4. Select Reconnect Original Files to all Proxies
  5. You will see the status change of the Project Items in the page as they are reconnected

Downloading Proxy for Original

If you are in the search or collection page right click on the asset and choose “Get Proxy”. If you navigate to the asset page for that asset, click on the gearbox and choose “Get Proxy”.

It will download the proxy and link it to the original file.

Bulk download proxy for Original

  1. Open the panel
  2. Go to the Project overview
  3. To the right of Project Items click on the gearbox
  4. Select Get Proxies for all originals
  5. You will see the status change of the Project Items in the page as they are reconnected

Proxy Format Overview

The proxy that will open is either a format that is uploaded to the asset with the type EDIT_PROXY or PPRO_PROXY or it will use the h.264 web proxy file that is created for the web preview. This proxy is currently a 720p h.264 with 2 channels of audio, whereas the EDIT_PROXY or PPRO_PROXY can be configured and have as many audio channels as you wish.

Limitations

If you are using the MP4 low resolution proxy file that we create for display in the web browser (known as the web-proxy) as a proxy format then you should be aware that it only supports 1 track of 2 channel audio. This might not match your original material, and upon adding the original to a proxy you will not see the additional audio tracks. If you import the original first and the audio channel layout is different you might not be able to add the proxy. Please see the Adobe Premiere Pro CC documentation for more information on what is supported for proxies.

To get around the above limitation we support creating "Edit Proxies" via the iconik Edit Proxy transcoder.
